About the Artist

Darcy Gusse Edinga

As long as I can remember, I have been creating. At the age of 6, I was designing and sewing Barbie outfits with scraps from my mother's sewing projects. I feel most satisfied when being creative and doing my art. Continuing with my passion for fibres, painting on silk has been a perfectly versatile medium for me.

My interest in fiber art and fashion design manifested at a very young age. I remember sitting on the floor beside my mother and her sewing machine, in my glory creating masterpieces with her fallen fabric scraps! I grew up on the farm with no close neighbors, which left many hours for entertaining myself. Favourite pass-times included picking wild flowers, collecting frog eggs, and finding the best rocks ever! These activities shaped and influenced my perspective and creativity today.

I have been in business painting on silk since 1985 and still love what I do!

My art is nature-inspired, whimsical, and images often depict Canadian culture and history. I interpret color and design on the most amazing natural fiber, silk! Being very luxurious, it drapes beautifully, has an organic sheen, and is incredibly comfortable to wear, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As a color enthusiast, I love the intense, bold colors that can be painted with dyes on to the silk.

Quality is of utmost importance! Heart and soul is put into everything that comes out of the studio, creating art and wardrobe pieces that are extraordinary statements, or simple, elegant scarves. Creating beautiful fashion accessories is my passion, my pleasure. I treasure your feedback and love to know my creations are bringing joy to someone's life.

More About My Background

Graduating from the University of Alberta in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, I majored in fashion design, augmenting my training at Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina in 1982.

Other classes in quilting, jewelry-making, paper-making, and calligraphy have enhanced my creative process regularly up to the present. The 30+ years of practicing my craft have permitted me to experiment and develop my art form.

Currently, I live in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada with my husband and  work full time in my quiet, sunny, home-based studio. The studio name, Silk Concepts, includes production work and creating one-of-a-kind silk art. I work with 3 other very talented people in the shop, one being my daughter!

In my spare time some of the things I enjoy doing are, traveling, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, and I love to garden. Somehow my childhood love for rock-collecting also keeps creeping into the picture, I have a great tiered rock garden in my back yard!

I am blessed to be able to work with fabric and colour, creating beautiful art for people to enjoy. I am honored to have had my art purchased and sent around the world, being presented to many dignitaries in Canada and abroad. I would love to share my creations with you, too!
